Alex the Mutt was the love of my life, but she could have been euthanized before having had a chance to live. Please join me on my journey to find love, and the emotional conflict I endured when forced to leave a dog behind.

These strays deserve more. All it takes is compassion and understanding. Too many animals are killed before their time, and this has got to end now. If only more people would stop and think first before going to a pet store or breeder. Instead, visit a local rescue, pound, or shelter. It’s time to be their voice; please help spread the word.

Those who love dogs will understand the deep connections we form with our beloved pets. Alex The Mutt chronicles the relationships of the author with a few of these members of her family, all rescue animals. The first ones set the pattern for the level of commitment, and the joy that results when we welcome a rescue dog into our homes. The last one, though, becomes a greater challenge, turning to heartache when Perlin has to admit that Alex cannot remain with her. Don’t let that deter you from reading, however. Alex does find a “forever home” where he is happy.

Perlin writes with a sureness that leaves no doubt that she lived what she speaks. Her love for and dedication to her dogs is boundless and comes through clearly.

This is a short read, but animal lovers will resonate with the warmth and intimacy Perlin portrays.

Alex the Mutt From Death Row to Cozy Home edition by Brenda Perlin Dianne Gardner Arlene R O'Neil Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

A sweet mini-memoir of the dogs in the author's life... not all happy, not all sad... just the real stories. I heartily endorse the "adopt, don't shop" philosophy when coming to pets. So glad that Alex's story is out there in the world.
I picked this story up for my daughter who was wanting to think of getting a puppy. It is the tail (hah!) of a woman's quest to find her way through dog ownership, and includes some great messages about the dangers of puppy mills and the plight of the older dog at the Pound. If you're a dog lover, this quick read will touch your heart.
Brenda takes you through an emotional journey in a short time. She sheds light on a problem in the animal world that people want to overlook. We got our kitty (use the term loosely as he is now a massive cat due to his breed, but I wouldn't trade him for the world!) from PetSmart. This particular PetSmart rescued he and his family members from a kill shelter, and then place them with 'foster parents' while they wait for adoption. It breaks my heart to think that he was in a kill shelter. For us, it was love at first sight, and we haven't looked back!
This particular story sheds light on the dog side of the story, a small portion of it being from the dog's perspective. It takes only a few moments, but this sweet story holds a powerful message!
A short, sweet memoir about the author’s journey through her life with dogs and learning to respect the care, energy, and dedication it takes to share your home with one. And sometimes learning those lessons the hard way. The times the author lost or had to give up on a dog she loved tugged at my heart, and I could really relate, having been in a similar position. I’d recommend this short read for anyone who loves dogs, wants to help rescue animals, and wants to share the experience. I would like to hear more about Alex - maybe even a whole story one day!
With Alex the Mutt, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It is a great story a dog, but it’s much more than that.

It also chronicles a journey. The author starts as a non-dog owner, and ends up a dog owner. Through that journey, the reader is given a unique insight into the author’s life. Her childhood, her relationships with her dad, and even her awkward teen years are part of that journey. Along the way, we also meet people who should never be allowed to own dogs. Grrr! And we live through the poignancy of dogs who never have the chance for a life with a loving family.

Brenda Perlin's Alex the Mutt is a lovely, heartwarming story. The beautiful illustrations bring the story alive, adding depth and breadth. If you’re in the mood for some great fiction, Ms. Perlin is also the author of Fractured Vows (Brooklyn and Bo Chronicles Book Three). It’s is a wonderfully written story.
Alex the Mutt From Death Row to Cozy Home
by Brenda Perlin

This was a heart warming book of a dog loved so much that aurthor wrote about how Alex changed their lives. Animals are powerful loving creatures and can certainly get into your heart as no other. Their unconditional love and warmth and the joy they bring into our lives. Had a dog named Rumor for years after her death I couldn't bare to have another so traded dog for a cat. Now I have two dogs and one cat. Don't know what I'd do without them all. I agree with Brenda that adoption is needed and puppy mills need to be shut down.
I think I mostly cried from the beginning of this book until the very last page because this was a story about things that are so close to my heart. Brenda Perlin has done it again. Brought an important message before the reader, wrapped it in a beautiful, heart warming package and claimed us to open our eyes for the wonderful animals around us before rushing to the nearest pet shop.

I absolutely loved, loved this story as well as Arlene R. O'Neil's short opening in the beginning of the book. An opening that made my heart weep and nearly forced me to drive to the nearest animal rescue place and save all the good, old ones and just hug them like forever. Softly murmuring onto their fur, I love you.
